In 1889 a young Thomas Andrews began a career at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. By all accounts, he was a brilliant and dedicatedemployee and his rise up the ranks of the company came rapidly. As early as 1901 he was the head of the design department and in 1907 hewas the technical director of the shipyard. Together with Alexander Carlisle, he is considered one of the chief designers of the Olympic and Titanic.
