| Stanley Lord fit son apprentissage dans la marine, et en 1897 il entra à la West India and Pacific Steamer Line. Cette compagnie fut absorbée en 1900 par la Leyland Line. Il obtint son premier commandement en 1906 et le Californian sera son quatrième commandement. |
